In an interview with Electric Journal in August, Choi Jai-chul, Chairman of Climate Change Foundation, discussed the role of the power sector in strengthening climate adaptation and resilience in the face of growing climate risks.

As extreme weather events such as heatwaves and torrential rainfall become increasingly frequent, Chairman Choi emphasized that climate adaptation and resilience have emerged as critical priorities at the national level. He called for essential infrastructure—including roads, railways, and power grids—to be redesigned with future climate risks in mind, alongside a shift toward data-driven prevention and systematic risk management.

For the power sector, he highlighted the need to strengthen technical flexibility by making use of a diverse range of zero-carbon energy sources. He also stressed the importance of expanding flexible resources such as distributed energy systems, microgrids, demand response (DR), and energy storage systems (ESS) to enhance the resilience of the power system.

Chairman Choi further noted that investment in the power grid should be viewed not simply as an expansion of electricity supply, but as an investment in national security and climate adaptation. He also emphasized that the climate crisis and energy transition present an opportunity to strengthen the global competitiveness of Korea’s power industry.
