– Reaffirming Solidarity with Climate-Vulnerable Nations and the Value of Sustainable Global Cooperation

 

On March 28, the Climate Change Center (CCC) provided an emergency relief donation to support communities severely impacted by a 7.7-magnitude earthquake in north-central Myanmar. As CCC has long operated a local office and conducted numerous climate cooperation projects in Myanmar, it expressed deep sorrow that both its partner ministries and its local staff were directly affected by the disaster.

The earthquake caused widespread damage across the Sagaing and Mandalay regions, reaching as far as the capital city, Naypyidaw. According to the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), thousands of people were killed or injured, and hundreds of thousands are in urgent need of humanitarian assistance.

Naypyidaw, which was also heavily impacted by the quake, is home to the headquarters of the Ministry of Agriculture, the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation, and the Environmental Conservation Department (ECD). These ministries have been key partners of the Climate Change Center since 2018, working together to promote climate resilience in Myanmar through initiatives such as the distribution of high-efficiency cookstoves.

In a gesture of solidarity, the Climate Change Center provided emergency relief funds totaling MMK 100,000,000 (approximately KRW 70 million). The donation was delivered to Mr. U Thura Soe (Deputy Director General, Ministry of Agriculture), Mr. U Ba Kaung (Deputy Director General, Ministry of Natural Resources and Environmental Conservation), and Dr. San Win (Director, Environmental Conservation Department). The funds were used to support the provision of clean water, hygiene supplies, temporary shelter, and medical aid in the affected areas.

CCC also received heartfelt messages of appreciation from its counterparts in Myanmar, who expressed deep thanks not only for the ongoing climate cooperation but also for the solidarity shown in the face of such a tragic and unforeseen disaster. The support served not just as material aid, but as a reaffirmation of true international partnership in times of crisis.

Over the past several years, the CCC has worked closely with Myanmar’s ministries to distribute high-efficiency cookstoves throughout the country. This project has contributed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, improving indoor air quality, and decreasing reliance on traditional fuels—all of which enhance public health and quality of life. Ultimately, the initiative aims to help establish a sustainable development foundation in climate-vulnerable regions.

Through these long-standing partnerships, the CCC has built trust with its partner countries and remains committed to meaningful and practical cooperation. This recent emergency assistance is part of that broader commitment to shared responsibility and global solidarity.

This initiative serves as a powerful reminder of how essential international solidarity and cooperation have become in an era of increasingly frequent climate-induced disasters.
