On August 18, Chairman Jai-chul Choi of the Climate Change Center met with the Ambassador of Slovenia to discuss opportunities for bilateral cooperation on climate action and sustainability. The meeting was organized to explore synergies between Slovenia’s “Green Slovenia” initiatives—focusing on biodiversity and environmental campaigns—and the Climate Change Center’s climate and energy education and outreach activities in Korea.

During the meeting, the Slovenian side emphasized that digital data storage generates more carbon emissions than air travel and introduced Digital Cleanup Day, a global campaign held annually in March. The Ambassador proposed jointly launching this initiative in Korea. In response, Chairman Choi expressed strong support, noting that the campaign could be developed into a large-scale, citizen-driven movement to reduce the digital carbon footprint by engaging universities, private companies, NGOs, and local governments.

The two sides also identified further areas of collaboration, including “Bee Diplomacy” initiatives to highlight the value of pollinators, co-hosting international events on biodiversity, organizing urban beekeeping workshops, and advancing environmental education. They additionally discussed integrating cultural and artistic programs—such as concerts, exhibitions, and creative collaborations—with climate messages to broaden public engagement and awareness.

This meeting laid the foundation for comprehensive cooperation that extends beyond climate action to encompass biodiversity, digital carbon reduction, and the fusion of culture and sustainability. Chairman Choi remarked, “When environment, culture, and citizen participation come together, the impact of international cooperation is greatly amplified,” reaffirming the Climate Change Center’s commitment to building diverse partnerships in Korea and translating such collaboration into tangible outcomes.
