- Netflix Boosts Efforts Toward 2030 Net Zero
- Xpansiv Expands into Korean Carbon Market with KRX and NHIS
The recent moves by Netflix and Xpansiv are drawing attention amid the global expansion of the voluntary carbon market and stronger climate action. Netflix secured high-quality forest-based carbon credits through a long-term deal with the American Forest Foundation (AFF), while Xpansiv, the world’s largest carbon market infrastructure provider, is accelerating its Asian market entry via strategic partnerships with top Korean financial institutions. As ESG and sustainability trends spread, the voluntary carbon market is becoming a key tool for boosting green competitiveness across industries.
Netflix and AFF Carbon Credit Partnership
Global OTT company Netflix has entered into a long-term carbon credit agreement with the American Forest Foundation (AFF) to achieve its 2030 net-zero target by supporting reforestation and tree planting efforts in the southern United States. Netflix aims to restore 75,000 acres of forest and generate 4.8 million carbon credits by 2032, contributing to rural economic revitalization and ecosystem conservation. The company plans to reduce Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 46% and Scope 3 emissions by 27.5% by 2030, focusing on energy efficiency, renewable energy use, and investments in nature-based climate solutions. Additionally, in 2024, Netflix purchased 1.03 million tons of high-quality carbon credits to offset its emissions, contributing to its net-zero ambitions.1)
Xpansiv Teams Up with KRX and NHIS for Korean Carbon Market
Xpansiv is entering the Korean carbon market through collaboration with KRX and NH Investment & Securities (NHIS). It has signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with KRX to support the voluntary carbon market, Article 6 trading under the Paris Agreement, and the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA). Meanwhile, Xpansiv is working with NHIS to improve access to high-quality carbon credits and renewable energy certificates (RECs). Notably, Xpansiv’s CBL exchange enables these two financial institutions to attract global institutional investors and ensure transparent price formation, thereby enhancing the international competitiveness of the Korean carbon market.2) 3)
Key Implications
• Growth of Carbon Market Participation in Entertainment
→ With the recent global boom of Netflix’s series KPop Demon Hunters, the entertainment industry is experiencing rapid growth worldwide. Consequently, the industry is actively participating in the voluntary carbon market by reducing its own emissions and purchasing high-quality carbon credits, contributing to environmental protection. This movement demonstrates strengthened global leadership in sustainability and environmental responsibility.
• South Korea Emerging as a Hub for Asia’s Voluntary Carbon Market
→ Through collaboration with KRX and NH Investment & Securities (NHIS), Xpansiv is reinforcing South Korea’s role as a hub for Asia’s voluntary carbon market. This partnership lays a crucial foundation for South Korea to establish itself as a center for carbon trading in the region. Xpansiv will continue to support sustainable growth through ongoing cooperation with the Korean market.
The global popularity of K-content and the growth of the OTT industry are enhancing national brand value and positively influencing the activation of Korea’s carbon market.
