On July 15, Chairman Choi Jai-chul of the Climate Change Center participated in the 2025 East Asia Cooperation Forum, held at the Westin Josun Hotel in Seoul, serving as the chair of Session 3 titled “Joint Response to Climate-Induced Disasters.” The forum, co-hosted by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Korea and the Jeju Peace Institute, served as a multilateral regional platform to explore collaborative responses to complex challenges, including the climate crisis and digital transformation.
During the session, participants discussed the increasing urgency of addressing transboundary climate-related disasters—such as extreme weather events, sea level rise, wildfires, and floods—across the East Asian region. Key areas of focus included the development of early warning systems, the establishment of regional climate information-sharing platforms, and capacity-building for disaster response personnel. There was broad consensus on the need to strengthen practical and coordinated mechanisms to respond effectively to climate-induced disasters.
The session also highlighted the importance of advancing climate security cooperation and called for East Asia’s regional collaboration to evolve into a future-oriented framework grounded in flexibility and inclusiveness.
As session chair, Chairman Choi facilitated the overall discussion, synthesized insights from government representatives and experts, and outlined key considerations for strengthening regional cooperation in climate disaster preparedness and response.
